Description
Rifampin 300 mg capsules are a bactericidal antibiotic used primarily for the treatment of tuberculosis and other bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. It inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by binding to the beta subunit of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, preventing transcription. This mechanism disrupts bacterial replication, leading to cell death.
Each capsule contains 300 mg of rifampin in an oral formulation, supplied in bottles containing 60 capsules. The medication is administered on an empty stomach to enhance absorption, typically one hour before or two hours after meals. It has a wide distribution in body tissues and fluids, including cerebrospinal fluid, making it effective for infections such as tuberculous meningitis.
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, rash, and discoloration of bodily fluids, such as red-orange urine, sweat, and tears. Hepatotoxicity is a significant risk, particularly in patients with preexisting liver disease or concurrent use of hepatotoxic drugs. Periodic liver function monitoring is recommended during prolonged therapy.
